Channelisation is flagged as an environmental impact on some catchments – is there a database of all Irish rivers that have been channelised ?
There is a database of river barriers such as weirs, dams etc, but not seen similar for highly modified rivers (easy to spot on map as they look like a canal)
What are the environmental issues with straightening rivers? Why was it done in the first place? Is it something to fix, or are we better to focus on the pollution pressures and ignore the hydromorphology?
